Guaranteed Investment Certificates offer fixed, guaranteed returns with CDIC protection. Lock in today's rates before they drop further.

Why GICs belong in your portfolio

GICs (Guaranteed Investment Certificates) are the safest investment in Canada. Your principal is guaranteed and CDIC-insured up to $100,000. In exchange for locking your money for a set term, you get a fixed, guaranteed interest rate — no market risk whatsoever.

GICs are ideal for the conservative portion of your portfolio, short-term savings goals, or when you believe rates are about to drop and want to lock in today's rate.

GIC
laddering strategy

01

What is a GIC ladder?

Instead of locking all your money into one term, split it across 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5-year GICs. Each year one matures, giving you access to a portion while the rest earns higher long-term rates.

02

When to use GICs vs HISAs

Use GICs when you can lock money away and want a guaranteed rate. Use HISAs when you need liquidity. If GIC rates are higher than HISA rates (they usually are), the lock-in premium is worth it for money you won't need.

03

GICs in registered accounts

You can hold GICs inside your TFSA, RRSP, FHSA, and RESP. This means guaranteed returns that are also tax-free (TFSA) or tax-deferred (RRSP). A powerful combination for conservative investors.

04

Lock in before rates drop

When the Bank of Canada cuts rates, GIC rates follow. If you believe rates will continue falling, locking in a 3-5 year GIC now guarantees today's rate for the full term — even if rates drop to zero.
